Tips in the surroundings
Of course Insel-Camp Fehmarn offers a great variety of leisure activities and you could easily spend your whole holidays on the campsite. Nevertheless we would like to give you some advice for excursions. And if your holidays are not long enough to see everything we would be pleased to see you again.
Holiday on the sun-island
With a surface of 185 km² and its 78 km coastal line sun-island Fehmarn is the second largest island in Germany. It belongs to Schleswig Holstein and is situated in the south-western part of the Baltic sea. Thanks to favorable air-streams, this island is the sunniest and driest island in Germany.
Comfortable journey
You can reach Fehmarn across a gratuitous bridge at every time day and night. The island is linked to the continent via “Fehmarnsundbrücke”, an impressive construction, which has been given the nickname “biggest coat-hanger in the world” and which has been classified as a historical monument since 1998.
Simply enjoy the beach
78 km of coastal line and endless natural beaches invite to discover more.
Hiking, biking, skating, riding and playing golf
Fehmarn is “flat like a flounder”, as the Germans say, a fact which invites to extended tours on foot, by bike, with inline-skates or on horseback. On the nearby golf ground we can book training lessons including Greenfee discount for you.
Culinary joy
During your excursion you will certainly come across a “farm café”. You can have home-made cakes and snacks there. You will also appreciate some fresh fish served in various preparations. Some Baltic air in the kitchen gives a very special taste, which Annekatrin Detlef describes brilliantly in her cooking-book “Stets eine Brise Ostseeluft im Küchenduft”. The book is a real treasure for leisure-cooks who want to have the taste of Fehmarn still back home.
Shopping
Red brick houses and rural half-timbered houses with innumerable, well assorted shops and boutiques make your shopping tour unforgettable. Of course you can also find the current discount shops.
Natural event: Aquatic birds’ reservation
Fehmarn is the crossroad of two important bird itineraries. In a national park, the aquatic birds’ reservation Wallnau to the west of the island where 250 different bird species find best breeding and nutrition conditions. Throughout the area a nature instruction path with hiding places for bird-watching has been built. All visitors have the chance to see wild living birds very closely in their natural environment. In the nearby visitors’ center varying exhibitions explain the aquatic birds’ life.
One day for the museum
…is not enough in Fehmarn. Because there are almost a dozen of exciting exhibitions for children and adults, for example:
- Germany’s biggest shark-basin and 40 more show-aquariums in the “Meereszentrum Fehmarn”
- “Experimenta”, Fehmarn’s crazy laboratory will turn you into another Einstein
- The exhibition “Planet earth” takes you on a journey from the Big bang to the dinosaurs up to the current human being. There is even an earth quake simulator, you can dig for gold and precious stones.
- In Burgstaaken harbor, you can admire the complicated technology of a real submarine, the “U 11” and test the narrow bunks.
- In the Peter-Wiepert-Heimatmuseum you can find a fascinating collection of geology, local history, craft, guilds, navigation and hunting in Fehmarn in 23 historic rooms. The ideal start for an astounding journey through time.
- The Mill on the… Sea. It’s a historic windmill in this case. In the museum Jachen Flünk belonging to the mill you can learn some interesting details about country - life and grain manufacturing on the island of Fehmarn.
Fisherman’s friend
Come to a boat trip with a real fisherman. You can choose among melodious names like Fangfahrt (fishing tour), Brückenfahrt (bridge tour), Sonnenuntergangsfahrt (sunset tour) Hochseeangeln (offshore fishing), and the fishers are going to show you every-day-life in their job.
Can you see the lighthouse on the horizon?
Flügger lighthouse that sends its signals into the dark from the south-west of the island can be watched as well. After climbing up the narrow winding stairs you will be rewarded with a spectacular view far over Fehmarnsundbrücke on one side and until Heiligenhafen on the other side.
Go-Kart and Silo-climbing
Just at a few minutes’ walk from Insel-Camp you can drive and climb as much as you want. You can look forward to an exciting race on the 400m-indoor circuit as well as to Europe’s highest safety climbing installation in different levels.
